Both versions share the same Listening and Speaking tests. The difference is in Reading and Writing - and in who accepts them.
Choose Academic if you are...
- applying to a university at undergraduate or postgraduate level;
- registering with a professional body, such as nursing or medicine, that asks for Academic.
Choose General Training if you are...
- applying for migration or permanent residence;
- going abroad for work experience or a training programme;
- joining secondary education in an English-speaking country.
What changes in the test
Academic Reading uses longer, more academic passages; General Training uses everyday and workplace texts. In Writing Task 1, Academic candidates describe a graph, table or diagram, while General Training candidates write a letter.
