Most students start writing the moment the timer starts. It feels productive, but it is the main reason essays drift off-topic - and task response is a quarter of your Writing score. Five minutes of planning fixes that.
Minute 1: decode the question
Underline the topic, then the exact instruction. "Discuss both views and give your opinion" needs both sides and a clear position. "To what extent do you agree?" needs one position, held consistently from the introduction to the conclusion.
Minutes 2-3: choose two strong ideas
A Band 7 essay does not need five ideas. It needs two ideas that are developed properly - explained, supported with an example and linked back to the question.
- Write each idea as one short sentence.
- Add one specific example to each.
- Cross out anything you cannot explain in 60-80 words.
Minute 4: write your thesis
Your thesis is your answer to the question in one sentence. If the examiner read only that sentence, they should know exactly where you stand.
Minute 5: map the paragraphs
Introduction, two body paragraphs, conclusion. Note the idea for each body paragraph and start writing - with 35 minutes left for a focused, well-organised essay.
Planning is not lost time. It is the difference between writing 270 words and writing 270 relevant words.
